How does one know if one has broken one's toe?

ps I totally taped my toes together because I seem to remember that being something that one might do in such a situation. And I have permission from my boss to go to the doctor if I want. I just don't know if I have actually broken my toe or if it's just bruised and ornery. Plus...they can't do much for a broken toe anyway, right?
