You guys...I am about to commit a rant. You have been warned.

On grey days and in the twilight hours I believe that all cars should have their lights on. But there are many, many drivers who are apparently not of this opinion and just don't bother. And it pisses me off something fierce, because it's fucking dangerous. I try to keep my eyes peeled for stupid drivers of all persuasions, but the ones who don't turn their lights on unless it is pitch black outside really drive me nuts.

Now, one solution would be for all cars to have running lights-- if you turn the car on, the lights turn on, and when you shut it off, the lights turn off. Some cars already have this. I don't actually know if it is standard in new cars or not. But even if it is, that doesn't really do anything to make people with older cars turn on their fucking head lights.

Last week I was walking back from the mall near my work and it was twilight and I began to cross a small side street before I even saw the orange car in the road. The only reason I actually saw it was because the driver had his blinker on. I did that thing that I do which nobody can interpret correctly, where I rapidly open and close my hand at them to signal that they need to turn their lights on. The driver rolled down his window to ask me what the hell I was doing so I was able to ask him to turn his lights on, please. Which he then did.

This morning (when it was both early and overcast) I ranted at a fellow pedestrian as we walked to the T about how frustrating and dangerous it is that drivers don't turn their lights on enough, that they think "Oh, it's not really dark out, I won't bother". He seemed to agree with me, but I don't think he was expecting a rant quite so early in the morning. He remarked that it's worse in the morning because all these drivers are sneaking about looking for parking spaces so they dart out of side streets with no warning.

Yeah. As a pedestrian, I pretty much hate cars. A lot.

comments
